Down My Throat: Through the river of denial
16/02/06 || Statik Majik
Through the river of denial..? Is there a river of acceptance somewhere too? How does the river of denial differ from.. you know, like an ordinary river? When the river finally ends to the sea, what’s that sea called? Sea of Total Denial..? What’s the superlative for “denial” anyway? I’m sorry, but for some reason that whole metaphore kind of… well, sucks. As did my lame attempt to make jokes about it.
I have a feeling that these people listened their dose of Biohazard and Entombed before they started to compose for this album. And maybe during the composing process as well. They probably even held “Wolverine Blues” and “State Of The World Address” albums near the mixing table for comparison.
So yes, the production is good. So is the music. Moshpit material if you ask me. Catchy as fuck. Like a venereal disease even. I think they’re loosely categorized as hardcore but I disagree.
And what do you know, this is what their bio says:
“Musically Down My Throat are definately pushing the boundaries of what is considered to be hardcore. Comparisons are hard to make, but if there was a gun to my head I might label Down My Throat as a hybrid of early Integrity, Strife, Merauder, At the Gates and 80’s thrash metal bands…”
How about adding Biohazard and Entombed to that list and erasing the other bands on the list? These dudes love Teh Guitarsound of Tomb, you know. And how about replacing the “80’s thrash metal bands” part with “early 90’s metal bands” to get closer to the truth. Ok, seriously, it doesn’t sound anything like Entombed except that there’s small resemblance in the guitarsound. I said small, so don’t hold that against me in the court of law.
Dispite the fact that I like this album, I don’t dig what they did to vocals. Krisse’s voice is more than suitable for this kind of music and you can even hear that there’s supposed to be anger in his voice. Too bad that studiowork fails to transfer that feeling thru the album. I don’t know are the vocals intentionally mixed this way or not, but it sounds like the vocalist is holding back or afraid to put his mouth close to the mic when he’s singing… I mean yelling.
Overall I’d say that the songs are just a bit too mediocre. 11 good songs, but there’s only few songs that really stand out from the album. “Lights Out” is one of them. “Broken Glass Of Failure” the other (don’t even get me started with THAT title, hahah). The rest just feels like variations of each other. Which ain’t too bad when the songs are actually good, but I just yearn more.
And I’m fucken 100% sure that Down My Throat is amazing live band. Just listen to the album once or twice and you know what I mean. Like said earlier in this review: moshpit material.
And I just have to add that the album artwork is fucken amazing. The designer definatelly knows what “beauty in simplicity” means. This is one of the few album covers that I wish I’d done. Well, there’s shitloads of those actually, but that’s really another story.
7 denials of river full of 10’s
PS. No, “Burn My Eyes” is not a Machine Head cover. And neither is “Lights Out” an Entombed cover.
